: (the inner idiot keeps
: whispering "you NEED a surf kayak")
I had a brainstorm several months back to do the following:
Buy a nice surfboard blank from ClarkCraft, whatever style suits your fancy.
Carve out butt and heel dimples to fit you.
Using a piece of neoprene or latex a foot or two longer than the board, and a couple feet wider, cut a 12" diameter hole to stretch over your waist. Sit on the blank and stretch the rubber over your body and over the board. Staple the rubber to the board so it stays in place. Glass over the latex. Pop in a movie or grab a book and wait for the glass to cure.
Pop the top off, get out, and seam the boat back together at the rail.
Cut the cockpit into a keyhole, and use woodstrips, "the garden hose", or a plastic coaming off a WW kayak to build a coaming up.
If I lived closer to surf, I'd probably try it. Considering where I live now, I'll probably never make it happen!
