No, other than that fir is rather heavy. Pine or cedar will produce a lighter boat.

Oak and ash both steam bend very nicely. If you have the tools to do so, you can get green or air dried wood at a firewood dealer and process it into rib stock. It only needs to be a couple feet long (or perhaps a bit more), you you may even be able to look at logs that are already cut and split in order to get nice, straight grain. It's dirt cheap to do it this way and you have complete control over how the lumber is sawn.
