: Is this what you use to dye a SOF? RIT dye? What is this water putty? What is
: it's role?
Well, it IS a fabric dye, so you could dye a SOF skin with this if you were using a cotton or polyester fabric for the sikn, and then covering that with a clear finish, like polyurethane. But I think handling the fabric with that hot, dripping, dye would be pretty messy.
I don't think it will work well on Nylon, (and 100% polyester may be iffy) but check the instructions on the side of the box.
Paint might be easier.
Either that, or buy a colored fabic. Most of the time the colored fabrics are the same price as plain white, so you save the time, effort and expense.
Durham's Water Putty is a product which is used as a wood filler. It is packaged as a dry powder and mixed with water before use.
To my eye it seems to have handling characteristics similar to plaster of Paris. It can be poured, molded and modeled like plaster, and sets up about in about the same time. Like plaster it expands slightly when it sets up, so it is good for filling holes, as the expansion forces it to stay in tight.
It would not surprise me if the stuff was just a mixture of plaster and wood powder -- but they don't list the ingredients on the can.
As long as it stays dry it lasts on the shelf for ever, and you can mix small or large quantities as needed. It is a staple on many shop shelves.

Hope this helps
