Hi Jeff, I'm not sure of anything since this is all second-hand info. But according to what I read in Canoe Rig and what I see at sites like http://www.geocities.com/proaethos/ the distiction is Atlantic Proa versus Pacific Proa. Both shunt in order to correct for wind direction but an Atlantic Proa always has its ama to leeward and the float tends to get buried in a strong wind. A Pacific Proa always has its ama to windward and the float tends to fly off the water in a strong wind. I understand these types are fairly dangerous which may account for the (slim) availability of plans. I've always wanted one though.

Again, I could be totally wrong but this is what I've read.
