: Oh yeah!

: www.isn.net/~jasmith/trailer.html will give some idea of the rig I ride.
: The hitch was off the bike so I could get (another!) rear tire. I go
: through a few of them! LOL

: www.isn.net/~jasmith/hitch.html should show the solid but ugly hitch )off
: teh bike).

: My original thought was to pop the clammshell of the trailer frame, build
: some racks and extend the tongue but I'd have to reregister the trailer in
: each configuration each time I switched. Not good.

: Ultimately I will be scrapping all those pics out of my webspace to show
: progress of my 3 SOFs... Can't wait! My boss should be bringing me some
: wood (free!) to work tomorrow so I can get started on the gunwhales this
: weekend!

I'm not sure why ou would have to reregister teh trailer when it is modified, but I assume that is some requirement in your state. So just modify it once.

After seeing the family inside the trailer, I suspect that clamshell can hold a 40 to 50 pound boat fairly easily. Extend the tongue and put a rack on top of the clamshell, or use foam blockes and strapts to hold the boat on it. Tie down the nose of the kayak to the front end of the trailer tongue, moving it fore or aft as needed to give your trailer some balance and a little weight on the hitch.

If you doubt the strength of the clamshell, can you bring up a metal support for a rack, outside of the trailer, near the finders? It might have to be something that would be removed to open the trailer, but that would be a small problem.

Or, get a trailer for the car which can carry the boats and a motorcycle.
the bike is probably under 600 pounds, and the two boats would probably be under 120 for the pair, so your total load would be the trailer and 720 pounds. With a light trailer weighing in at 200 to 250 pounds you would be about 1000 pounds or less -- which should be about the max for the cars you mention.

With a trailer full of toys you can do interesting things, like one-man shuttles for river trips. Drop the cycle off at the take out point and contiue to the putin point with the boats on the trailer. Leave your car and trailer there, enjoy your trip, and when you pull the boats out you ride the cycle back to get the car. Load the cycle on the trailer, and tow it back to pick up your boats and the rest of your party.

Check harbor freight for trailer kits which you can use as a base for such projects.

Oh, and those trailers are great for getting plywood home from the store!

Just some thoughts
