: Charles -

: Nice looking kayak trailer. As my fleet grows I'm going to need something
: similar, and plan to weld it together myself. To that end, can you provide
: any details as to the dimensions of the steel used in your trailer?

: Thanks - Dave

Sure Dave, no problem,

The trailer frame is 5'W x 8'L and is made of 2" angle iron with three additional cross-members(angle iron) spaced out in the center of the frame.

The up-rights (5' long) and the cross -arms (6'long) are made of 2" x 2" box iron. The cross arms are spaced 20" apart with the lower one about 14" above the deck. This should allow for a couple of long storage boxes along the sides with additional deck area between the boxes. There is a piece of angle iron spanning the distance between the top of the uprights for stability.

The tongue is 114" long (total) with 24" running underneath to the first cross-member.(extending 90" out from the front of the frame)

After looking at some of the trailers that this guy had made, the only thing that I wanted to change was the tire size - change from 8" to 12". Which he did and he added an adjustable stand to the tongue.

If I remember right. I think he said the trailer itself weighed about 250 - 300 pounds. It has a GVWR of 1500 pounds so I've got plenty of room for kayaks! AND, I can haul 20' long boats with ease.

The trailer cost $650 plus tax, of course, and the price of a tag each year. Not much more than a name brand rack would sell for.

The only thing that I might change is the lighting. I'd like to have the lights rigged up so I could slide them rearward at night to get them closer to the end of the yaks.

I hope I covered it all, but,if you have any more questions, feel free to ask or you can E-mail me direct. Happy Building.

Charles
