I had the same problem with my Sheerwater Atlantic. I used very small finish nails with a rubber washer made out of inner tube so that the nail did not go all the way in and could be pulled back out. You end up with a nail hole, but it is easily filled with a splinter of wood.

Also I tied a string to the end of some strips and tied it off to a screw in the forms on the other side. I used the string to pull the strip tight while gluing. Looks like from the responses you've gotten a lot of others tried similar methods. Good luck!
