The Silva 70UN is a fine compass and my primary kayaking compass. I've used them on various kayaks for a number of years. The hand-bearing feature is handy, but in all truth, I have only used this feature on land, not while seated in the kayak. Due to the design, this compass will not "stick", even at extreme angles of heel. The disadvantage is that it projects high above deck and is exposed to damage during rescues. I have also had strong breaking waves coming over the bow, knock the compass out of its mounting bracket (it floats so I was able to retrieve it). On the standard model you can insert a pin at the end of the tube (handle) to prevent this. The illuminated model precludes this.

I recently had to replace a Silva 70UN that was 12 years old. I replaced it with another Silva 70UN.
