I'm partial to regular rubber cement. The office supply store variety is convenient and cheap. I just use it by the edge. paper lays flat and doesn't roll. The cement sits on top of the wood and can be rubbed off, or sanded off. I haven't seen any problems with varnish finishes from any glue residue.
