: I have a Teak woodstrip canoe. There is a crack
: behind & under the stern seat apprx. 12 or more inches
: long.
how wide?
: & he said the following: "Inside the canoe the ribs are glued to the
: canoe,
: not screwed in. Also, the fiberglass only goes up
: near the ribs and not under them. He said this crack
: will spread clear down the canoe. Even if he refiberglasses
: and epoxies it."
With enough epoxy and glass, you can fix it, but the results may not be worth looking at.
: I would very much appreciate any opinons of others.
: This appears to be between wood strips and not within
: a certain piece. I could not see the crack from under
: the canoe. (Even if there was, what would you say?)
: How would you fix this?
that type of stress failure is more interesting than a through and through crack.
: Thank you. John
A) a picture is worth a thousand words. see posts in kayak wikiki about how to post if you don't have a web site of your own.
B) Ive never worked with teak myself. But I seem to remember that it is a hard, beatiful, rot-resistant wood, it's downside is that it is more brittle than others.
C) that you mentioned that the strips are glued to the ribs, and not screwed is only relevant to the method to fix, and not relivant to the reason for the problem. Translation: if the glue has not failed, than it is not a source of the problem. it does however make it harder to fix.
One possible solution is to cut/scrape/sand off the existing ribs, glass and then relaminate ribs back in place. that is time consuming, dirty and tough, but will get your boat back into the water. It does not address the reason for the cracks in the first place though.
