: I'm just curious if anyone has done this, and if so, how well did it work?
: (Pictures anyone?) I'm curious as to whether they are sufficiently long,
: particularly the tongue, for a 17 or 18 foot kayak.
I bought a trailer from Harbor Freight. 4X4 flat with 12 inch tires. The tounge is unusable (too short). So far no real work has gone into it. The plans (very crude and amateuristic) have been drawn out and I will soon begin the cutting and welding.
If you have the resources to do-it-yourself you will save $$ and have exactly what you want. The trailer was on sale for $169, other materials should be under $150, and I plan a 4 boat capcity hauler with room for at least 2 bikes and dry storage boxes(only items not in the earlier cost estimate).
It was suggested by someone on the BB that I use a retractable tounge, and this is in the plans. Should make the trailer multipurpose.
There are messages in the archives related to this project, as much help was given when I posed a similar question a few months ago. If I can figure out how to put drawn plans on the BB I will do it. May give you something to improve upon.
Good luck,
Brian
