It saves my sanity in the winter, costs less than a ski pass and equipment, gives me something to play with in the summer and dream about in the winter, is cheaper than my wife's horses (and barn and tack and trailer and vet bills and and and), keeps me from being a couch potatoe, turns my shop into our version of Possum Lake Lodge (three boats going at once), provides interesting projects and the tools to do projects my wife wants. Probably cheaper than most of the other thins I would do during those hours -- probably does not cost me more than $3.50 per hour to build one. On balance, I would say I get more than it costs -- money isn't the only thing.
good luck
