Brian,

You're on the right track. The pipe is from a PVC 1/2" gray sprinkler riser. The knot inside the pipe is a double fisherman and the exposed knot is half of a double fisherman (double overhand slip knot).

The double fisherman is very difficult to untie after a load and has a very low profile so it is great to permanently tie two ends to form a loop.
