Sounds like the insurance will cover some of the expenses for rebuilding.
A few thoughts to consider: Any pictures you already have of the kayak construction can be used with their insurance report, as they would probably show some of the background (their barn) and miscellaneous tools and implements laying around. Be sure to go over every inch of those pictures as they will help you to remember (and claim) the items and their value. It is amazing how many little things are around which you tend to forget -- screwdrivers, hammers, paintbrushes, etc. It may not be much for one or two items, but the total will build up.
Don't forget to claim the cost of the heater itself. Was it under warranty?
Get an estimate on the cost of enough premilled strips ( delivered, and taxes included) for rebuilding your kayak. You should be able to find a price for a replacement of the resin and glass cloth, too. If premade frames are available (or a complete kit) for that model of boat, then you would have a cost estimate for replacement value. If frames aren't available, add in the cost of the plywood for the frames. And certainly add in the cost of your wood for the strongback.
If your friends rebuild the barn, find out what will happen to the old wood from the old barn. Don't let it be thrown away. Old barn wood has a value in the antique and crafts markets. It could also be nice dry wood for making strips, as a lot of barns were built from cedar. If they plan on selling it to crafters, leave it in as rustic a state as possible. (don't strip the paint off).
Best of luck to all of you.
