Your points concerning pvc are certainly valid. I was a victim of the short sightedness that I preach against so strenously. My statement of pvc being weak was too broad. While I still think wood is the current best choice, the different ID/OD schedules of PVC, other plastic pipes and tubes, and probably a few other materials are worth exploration. In my younger days I built a hang glider from 2X2 fir and visqueen(plastic). Being the intelligent, thoughtful person that I am I talked my little brother into testing it. He crashed. Now he's the successful board certified dentist...and I'm the poor black sheep. Go figure. Wrong application of good materials? Certainly.
