My feet are pretty big and legs are long so my heels are already almost touching. Another idea would be to use the forward bulkhead for yr footrest or a bar between adjustable footbraces so you have the full width. This would let you place your feet outboard when you want the support or towards the middle when you want to relax and wiggle yr toes.
