Dan,
As Ken explained, the best reason is to make layback rolls much, much easier. Bracing, easier. Edging, easier. You might not know how to roll now, but if you want to learn one day, you'll thank us for suggesting it.
The recess also gives your knees some purchase under the deck, which translates to better control.
A little more work but well worth it. Other than that, no real disadvantages.
