Others likely have a different opinion than me, but I don't find a spokeshave to be too useful for fairing the hull. Unfortunately, in off the shelf condition, they are prone to terrible chip out even following the grain. You really need to keep them sharp. On the other hand, I find them very useful for rough shaping paddles. I have four types and I think that the concave is most useful for shaping paddle looms, the convex for shaping the ridges such as on an aleut paddle or dishing a paddle blade, the flat sole for the exterior of the kayak or external stems and the round sole lease useful of all. It has the worse chip out. I think the flat sole is the best all around shave.
