: I've read that I need a spokeshave to get in the spaces that you can't get in
: with a block plane. Since I've started looking for spokeshaves, I've found
: convex, concave, flat soled, round soled, etc.
For the cost of a spokeshave, and the time involved in ordering it, and getting it set up to use, you could buy sandpaper and have the job finished.
For sanding curved areas, get a block of foam plastic and shape it to fit the curvature of the area you wish to sand. ths is easily done by sticking a sheet of coarse sandpaper to the work surface itself (grit side out) and sliding the soft foam over the grit a few times. Once your foam is shaped to match the work, remove the sandpaper from your work, and attach some sandpaper to the foam, grit side out, and use this for your sanding.
Cheap, fast, and you get any profile you want with little effort or cost.
Hope this helps
