"Woodshop Dust Control" by Sandor Nagalski (sp?) is not a bad book, but all the hobby books cover are the most basics.
I'm a big fan of venting outside - it used to be illegal to recirculate the air until the energy crisis. THen they started doing the research on what filtration is needed, and hence the development of cartridge filters, which are 99.9% at 0.3 microns. You are correct, its the 5-15 micron particles that do the most damage. These are small enough to defy gravity with the slightest air disturbance in the room - they take days to settle out. But still big enough to lodge in a lung sac and start an infection. Below 0.5 micron, they tend to get breathed back out of the lungs, or absorbed in and dont do any damage. Venting outside eliminates all this concern. It does exhaust heated air, but in a home shop you really dont run the thing 24/7 so it's not like an industrial application. You have to let makeup air in, and you have to be very careful about gas appliances in the space which require neutral or positive air pressure... But within those constraints venting outside is the safest, cheapest way to go.
I use my shopvac on hand tools, like the ROS. But all the stationary tools are hooked to the central DC. Much easier.
: I read a book about home shop dust control. The book said that what we need
: to be protected from is the real small particles (.3-5 Micron in size).
: The book suggested putting aftermarket .3-micron bags on whatever
: filtration system you use.
: Right now I'm using a Sears sop vac that put me back about 120 bucks. Sure is
: noisy. Eventually I'll send the big money but for now, a 6 horse power
: shop vac is my main collector.

: PS Check your library. They may hvbe the same or similar books on setting up
: a shop and controlling dust.
