With Greenland paddles, it's when I first take sandpaper to the carved blank. The sharp lines and edges disappear and once again, the wood takes on an organic shape.
With SOF kayaks, there are several "moments". The first occurs when the the top deck is complete and the temporary forms are removed. Viewed from above, the kayak shape is evident. The second moment occurs when the ribs are all in place and the "skeleton" takes on a 3-D shape. Third is when the frame is complete and you flip it over into its proper upright position. Lastly is when the skin is on and you can see the fine, graceful lines that will be slicing through the water in a few day's time.
