Hi Steve-

First I made sure that the deck sheer strip fit the hull sheer strip in the middle of the boat (for me, between forms 4 and 14). This involved putting a slight bevel along most of it (a la Nick's book, creating a minor gap inside the kayak and (ideally) no gap on the outside). Then I marked forms 2, 3, 4 on the strip and thought about how the bevel had to go from a small angle (say 10 degrees at form 4) to 90 degrees at form 2, and I made marks along the strip. I started by trying to plane a 45 degree bevel around form 3 and then gradually extended/rolled it towards each of forms 2 and 4. Actually, the 90 degree angle occured about half way between 2 and 3. Then I did the same thing between forms 14 and 16. I then sprayed 4 feet at both ends of the strip with water and got out my heat gun and warmed it up (and kept spraying it). Then I stapled it in place and put clamps, straps and U-shaped jigs wherever I could and continued to heat/spray it. After it had time to set I glued a second strip on.

It's not perfect, but it worked reasonably well. I really like the look of the strip laying flat on the deck for the first and last 2 feet of the kayak, and then bending across the chine and onto the sides. (I'm sure it'll work a lot better on my next kayak.)

I'd be interested in reading how others think their way through this.
