actually the sky is the limit when it comes to possible patterns. True...it is time consuming, but you should really only consider such patterns for the deck...which lessens the area one needs to cover. I have some beautiful chip carving patterns I developed from ornate and pictorial calligraphy. I've been trying to figure out how to use one on a kayak...but carving into the hull is not a viable option. Now...since the posts about rice paper appliques, etc....I think transfering the pattern itself is a good option. One fly in the ointment is that one may be afraid to use a boat that is in reality an heirloom. Naaah...not me. Mine get scratched and gouged.
