I like that insert idea. There is some 6mm MDF lying around in my shop. I can probably rout a hole with a shoulder into my 15mm melamine, and install the mdf flush with the tabletop. That will bring the router 9mm closer to the wood strips. Maybe I will fix it in some fancy way to be able to lift the insert out.

Which reminds me: I previously milled the strips on another setup taken from this forum, the Babina/Jacobson/Rehd circ saw - table saw, as described below. It worked very well, once I got everything to line up properly.
