Hello,
I have used a Buck Brother's block plane for almost everything on a boat.
Got mine at Home Depot, because I feel it's my mission to keep them in bussiness. :D
I keep it sharp with a bevel gauge on a wet stone, although I want to try abrasive cloth glued to glass someday.
It would be nice to own some great planes, if only for the beauty of them. for now, utility is the key.
Steve
