Larry
To fair my flat rear deck, I use a rectangular 3-1/2 X 9-1/2 inch sanding pad I got at a local hardware store. I start with 36 grit then go to 60 grit and finally 80 and 100 grit papers. By positioning the pad at various angles, I can follow the grain and control the width of the region being faired. It takes awhile, but works out well.
