Larry,
In addition to all the advise so far, I would add that after initial sanding, you might consider the use of a cabinet scraper the remove material. I like them when there is a combination of soft and harder woods. It reduces the likelihood of removing too much of the soft woods while leaving the harder and is often faster than your random orbital for scratches. Just keep them sharp at all times to prevent bruising of the wood surface.
