It wasn't very good on my canoe :(

In Response To: Red oak is fine for kayaks (Brian Nystrom)

I have not had good luck with the red oak I've used for the gunwales on a fresh-water canoe. Plans for my canoe called for the gunwales to just be varnished, so they had some protection from the elements, but apparently not enough. Maybe I hould have paddled in salt water :)

I spent $20 on the red oak for those gunwales and they lasted less than 6 years before rotting away in several areas. I spent $45 for the rest of the wood used in that boat, so this was a significant percentage! I store the canoe outside, and moisture from rain and snow seems to be the culprit.

Red oak looks great, but this time I'll seal them with epoxy before varnishing, and probably make them from a less expensive wood.
