Gordon,
The advice you got is the generally accepted practice. If I may, here is why. In an ideal world a bead and cove joint would be a good thing because it would help with alignment of the hull and deck. But in the real world it is almost impossible to keep the cove on the bottom hull from getting mangled during the construction or when you are trimming the overhanging glass. Once it gets roughed up the joint ends up looking worse than a rolling bevel.
