I use Titelok holders with the same base as pictured below. Bases are bolted thru the deck with 3 extra layers of 6 oz glass and 1.25 inch stainless fender washers to back it. If you remove the holder just the flat base remains. I wouldn't go with anything less robust but I am fishing saltwater. RAM holders are also good but the base has an integral ball which protrudes about 1.5 inches. Holders on forward deck can get in the way paddling so work out this position carefully. I have one forward and one behind the cockpit which I use far more often and always if trolling. I use the forward holder if I bring it just to park the rod while trying to boat a fish.
