Slings make sense, but you need to anchor them laterally as Tom does. If you allow the seat to swing from side to side, you'll be in for an interesting ride the first time you get in rough water. Being able to control the position of your C/G is critical to maintaining control of the boat. A swinging seat would be a huge liability in this regard.
