the kayak is for my kids (grebe) and i decided i wanted the security of straps over the top. with the magnets i would be able to open the hatch by pulling on it. with straps, i couldn't open it by pulling on it unless i released the straps. also, i thought about the compass thing, a figured it best to remove them.
