: what the heck are you talking about?? sounds very cool!!
: so are you saying that you melt the edges of the glass a little bit to stop
: unravelling?? does this destroy the coatings/sizings? will the glass wet
: out transparent on the edge? could you in fact then have a complex shape
: and sorta melt the glass onto it???
: how easy to screw up? gotta try all this out
Not much to tell. With a little practice you'll quickly find a happy medium between getting a smooth edge that resists unraveling and a charred puckered edge. If you don't clean up the long loose strings hanging off the edges they'll melt down into clumps, but otherwise you shouldn't be able to see where the edge was sealed. The method works particularly well on the inside seams that you can't reach by hand and the bulkhead taping where you have to cut notches in the tape so it will lay flat against the bulkhead. I have used the method mostly with 4 and 5 oz tight weave and some 6 oz glass. I didn't have any problems with wetting out the glass where it had been heat sealed. The process must be pretty hard to screw up since I didn't have any trouble.
