Lots of imaginative ideas here---is there a coatings chemist who can tell me why you can't just let the varnish skin over, remove the skin, and perhaps filter the remainder? Won't you just end up with a slightly lower-solids (i.e. thinned) batch of varnish? I sure hope so, because I don't want to have to dispose of the one and a half leftover pints I did nothing to protect.
