: The frame is almost done and I am now considering what to use as a finish. I
: would like to use teak oil or Thompson's. Does anyone have any thoughts or
: experiences with these?
: It looks like we will be using canvas for the skin. I am looking for
: suggestions on sewing the skin on. If anyone has a method that worked well
: with a tight fit I would like to hear about it.
Hi Greg
I think Tung oil is the most used but any sealer should do.. I forgot to seal my frame so some day I'll be able to report how unsealed wood holds up.
I used canvas ,stitched the way shown in Morris 's book.
It worked better than I expected.
After sewing there were a few rolls and waves in the skin but once the paint is applied the canvas tightens up right before your eyes!!
I used latex paint but an oil marine enamel would end up with a smoother finish. 2 or 3 coats will water proof but 7 or 8 will give you the best finish.
When you sew the canvas , you lay a batten down the centre line to pin the canvas to, Make sure the batten is a soft wood that the pins will stick into easily. I used a scrap of fir and didn't realize my mistake til after my fingers were really sore!!! Other than that, It was a piece of cake!!

: As for sealing the skin I have a marine enamel that I would like to paint on.
: Will this work to waterproof the skin? Any help would be much appreciated.
: Thanks.
