Elliot,
The line is braided Nylon starting cord like you use on lawnmowers and chainsaws. I melt the ends and draw it to a fine point before I try pulling it through the holes in the gunwales. It makes a fairly loose fit on my spare paddle, I tuck the other end of the paddle under the toggle lines just behind the cockpit and cinch them down.
