Thanks Jim that sounds like what I am looking to do. The picture you spoke of did not come through though. I had considered using some sort of threaded insert in the wood block to avoid drilling through the deck. What do you think?

: I use Titelok holders with the same base as pictured below. Bases are bolted
: thru the deck with 3 extra layers of 6 oz glass and 1.25 inch stainless
: fender washers to back it. If you remove the holder just the flat base
: remains. I wouldn't go with anything less robust but I am fishing
: saltwater. RAM holders are also good but the base has an integral ball
: which protrudes about 1.5 inches. Holders on forward deck can get in the
: way paddling so work out this position carefully. I have one forward and
: one behind the cockpit which I use far more often and always if trolling.
: I use the forward holder if I bring it just to park the rod while trying
: to boat a fish.
