Well, is there room for an opposing view?
This may sound strange, but I like it just the way it looks in that picture. I love the distressed look of Antiques, ( hate antiques, but.... love the look ). I wish you could leave it just that way, ( with appropriet finish of course ). I think it will lose something with all that spit and polish, and finished look. ?? Just an opinion!
I have always like the distressed look, but never have liked antiques themselves. Too much care, upkeep and difficulty with them. Plus you are afraid to touch them. But to put all that distressing on a project.... It was always fun and gave the same aged, well used look.

O.K., now you can finish it!!
