I had dark spots appear on the outside of my kayak after putting it away wet with the hatches closed. I was lazy and didn't check for water in the hatches, when putting it in the basement. I did get it dried out, and the dark spots went away. I promptly added a seal coat to the interior, as best I could. And now I always pop the hatches and dry the kayak out when I put it away.
