: I'm using Detco Crystal varnish applied with a foam brush. My hull came out
: great. Not so the deck ... brush marks and a few runs on the 4th coat ...
: it just didn't seem to wanna flow out. I think I need to thin it a little.
: How much thinning is customary for a final coat?

: Thanks!

You only need to thin varnish enough so that it self-levels before it skins over and "gels". The more you thin it, the less surface film you'll have per coat so you'll need to put on more coats to equal the same amt of protection. You can use mineral spirits or naptha to thin oil based varnish. Naptha flashes off faster than mineral spirits so your time between recoats are reduced. I can get 3 coats per day with varnish thinned 50/50 with naptha (1 in the am, 1 at noon, 1 at night) versus 1 per day unthinned varnish.
