: I am a couple months from starting boat number 2 (Shooting Star). The
: basement where boat number one was build in has been 'sacraficed' into a
: finished children's play room. The SS will be built in the garage in,
: starting after the spring thaw.

: I would like to build a nice Jewelry box for my wife in the mean time. Any
: suggestions on plans or inspirational books. I would like to expand my
: wood working skills, which are currently limit to those required by boat
: 1.

: Most of the plans on the web seem to be either a simple box with lid (like a
: cigar box) or inlay/scroll saw work....neither are what Im looking for.

: There seem to be many books on box and jewerly box building...can anyone
: comment/suggest any of these?

: Thanx and sorry for off topic, but this BBS always proves a good resource.

Without knowing what tools you have, it's kinda hard to make recommendations. Just about any book that has pictures and assembly / how-to instructions can help you build a box. However, some are more fun to do than others.

How about a bandsawn box. There's a couple of good books on how to do those avail. Only need a sander and a bandsaw to make them. Every box is different and most have lots of curves.

If you have a lathe (or access to one) you can turn a "box" (which is really a jar/bottle) with a lid.

You can also make a square/rectangular box using strips. Alternating different wood species can get you a very nice pattern on the box sides. Put the strip panels into a frame so that you don't have to use epoxy/glass to hold it together.

The boxes shown in the pic have different species of wood for the drawer faces. Each box has 2 drawers and the lid flips open. The top drawer face is false. The sides are flat panels in a frame (frame and panel const) and the lid is 1 piece solid wood (3 out of the 4 are anyway). These were simple to cut out and assemble. Each one takes around 10 hrs to do.
