Interesting reading the responses to Rick's question. I have three daughters and they all paddle enthusiastically on the other side of the world- in Australia (yeah 32 degrees today and light breeze on the lake- magic). We built 14' Chesapeake S&G which I have to say are just great! However, as Gordon points out we should have built bigger for my eldest who is now 12 and getting up to 160cm and 50kg. She's OK in the boat now and loves it dearly but in a year it'll be too low in the water and too cramped on her legs I suspect. My wife paddles this boat (just) and shes about the same size as my elder daughter but finds the cockpit too cramped.
The 14' is EXCELLENT for the younger girls (9 and 11) and they have taken to sea a few times. Its a fully fledged seagoing kayak.
I looked at building the 16'version but prefer the idea of a hybrid build or stripper for the next boat. Incidentally, all girls and my wife have trouble with my Guillemot strip built - its like watching a leaf on a pin!

All the best
MORT
