Oh yes, we drive cars, snowscooters, skates, iceyachts and other vehicles on the ice. The ice where the kayaks are is about 50cm. Longer out you can add a couple of dm´s. But you have to be sure and have the ability to read the ice.
A couple of years ago there was a MB going through not long from where I live. He couldn´t read the ice and was going to near open water from a little powerplant. The powerplant causes rapid water and vortexes and the ice can change overnight or even from one hour to another. The insurance is invalid when driving outside specially marked "iceroads". The national way-authority? guarantees certain iceways on some lakes. That roads is controlled every day. Speedlimit 30km/h! And the fines are heavy if you go faster! I know!
The reason for the speed limit are that if you go faster you drive a wave ahead of you that causes small cracks in the ice and they make it easier for the melting process underneath.
The camper was from a company selling iceskating gear. You can on one pic see the remaines of a campfire. That remains came from a party of iceskating people on a moonlight trip last fullmoon. It´s a very special experience going iceskating or paddling in the moonlight. Try it sometime! You don´t have to be crazy, just a little bit daring.
I think that Waylon Jennings hit the point in "I´ve always been crazy and it helps me from going insane". (be sure to have security, knowledge and common sense)
