I can't tolerate defacing a beautiful strip-built hull with stickers or plates to discourage theft.

I don't have a HIN on my boat but I did print "built by" and my name a couple of times in large type on a bubble jet printer using absorbant paper like onion skin. I then imbedded it under a fibreglass layer on the bottom of the boat in both of the hatch openings. You could also do it in the cockpit. It would take more effort than its worth for a thief to try to remove them and its pretty obvious to anyone a thief might try to sell it to. It should also satisfy any customs officer at the border. If you subsequently decide to sell it, you can give the buyer documentation to verify it is now their boat. It beats defacing the outside of a strip boat.
