From the pictures, it appears that you're using Luan, which is rather brittle (especially the core) and prone to cracking. If it's 1/4" thick, that makes the problem even worse. You'd be better off using 3mm or 4mm Okoume. The uniform thickness of the laminations makes it much better for bending.
