: That's so cool. I want to see that. I once heard of a guy that tried to move
: a house across the frozen lake and the truck broke down or got stuck or
: something and the house was stuck on the lake. I think they never got it
: out, and it sank. I also read about Babe Ruth taking a piano out on a lake
: for a party and then he left it and let it sink. Now some divers are
: looking for it as an artifact.
At the uranium mines in northern Saskatchewan, supplies are brought in across ice roads in winter. I've heard that in the old days, the grader operators would drive with their doors unlatched while clearing the roads, so they could make a quick getaway, if the ice broke. I've also heard, as Richard said, that you gotta go slow. If you overtake the "wave" that forms ahead of your vehicle, and climb up onto the "crest", all h*** breaks loose.
Last winter, also in Saskatchewan, a small town needed to raise money to upgrade their hockey arena. So they parked a junk car out on the local pond, & held a raffle to see who could pick the day the car would fall through the ice.
Every winter there are car racing clubs that set up racing ovals on frozen lakes. The ice can get plenty thick. Some ponds freeze solid all the way to the bottom.
