I've used Yakima braces on several kayaks and have found them to be durable,
easy to adjust, but not especially comfortable. Overall they are better than
plastic "Keepers".

Lately, I've switched to a home made adjustable design that is made with
telescoping tubes, and a "snap-on" connection. They are very comfortable,
and provide a wide range of foot positions due to the tube/plate configuration.
In addition, they pivot, providing additional comfort. Plus, they are
cheap and easy to make.

Though specifically designed for use with aluminum tubing, I'm sure
that can be adapted to hardshell use with a bit of re-engineering.
Even though they "snap-on", they have proven to be very secure.
