: Hi
: Shawn built a Fiberglass seat which was a lengthy process requiring an
: initial mold, a negative mold and a finished mold. I wonder if anyone has
: come up with a way to do it with one mold, if it would work better for
: rolling with a very low back support and a strap support and how far it
: should extend under your thighs for support. I've tried his and it was
: quite nice so want to build one but want to cut out a couple of steps if
: possible and improve upon it if possible.
: thanks

Okay, so my method doesn't give you a fiberglass seat, but I still love my custom seat, and it was pretty easy: 1)heat a piece of 1/8" plexiglas at (my source sez 150 centigrade)in the oven until it's pliable, 2)lay it on a block of regular upholstery foam, 3)lay a sheet of minicell or similar over it, 4) sit down and relax for a while 5)cut out the appropriate area of the plexi, 6) glue the minicell to it, 7)lay some plastic as a barrier in the kayak, 8)foam the bottom of the seat with 2-part foam (maybe the aerosol type would be okay- maybe too squishy), 9)slap the whole mess down on the plastic to support the plexi and conform to the kayak, 10)clean it up and velcro it down. Seven years later, I can still sit in the thing for hours, and my butt does just fine.
