I did that with my grab loops, but used the outer covering from a kernmantel rope and inserted a plastic coated braded steel line with swedges on the ends and then expoxied the ends into wooden handles. They work great and give me piece of mind when I leave my boat on top of my car, locked to the racks. They also stop the grab handle from moving around when I'm paddling because it is somewhat stiff.
