Bert makes a good point. My second Greenland paddle was a lot better than my first (although made but weeks apart). One of my daughters immediately decided that she wanted my first paddle, so it hasn't gone to waste. Another possiblity would be to make a storm paddle from the piece of wood you have now and then choose a really fine piece of cedar for your regular paddle.
